To All God's Children,
-->I believe it was Einstein that stated, figuratively of course, that God would not place dice with the universe. Therefore, it is no coincident that we were born the person that we were, that the universe exists as it does. It also conflicts with the problem of free will. If everything isn’t already determined for us, then free will would mean that parts of our behavior are unpredictable.
On the other hand you can believe that things don’t happen by chance, but have a predictable pattern. I like the idea of free will, but when you really think about it, it doesn’t make sense. The first and foremost reason is that we cannot pick and choose what person we live as. We just are who we are. We can say that people who are born with a certain terminal illness or mental retardation can’t help the way they act. Well, when you think about it neither can the rest of us. Much of our lives are shaped by our personality and much of our personality is shaped by our genetics and environment. There is a third factor and that is “natural forces”, which I will refer to them as.
Think about it, we may be fine one day and able to take care of ourselves just fine, and then the next day we could have a stroke and have to relearn all our basic motor skills. There is only a fine line between having the freedom to do as you please, and being nearly or completely incapacitated. Therefore, I believe that there really is a freedom within limit, as I got from Spinoza’s school of thought.
You are a person doing just fine you can stand up on your own with ease. Think about wanting to stand up and the thought can easily form and send an impulse down to your legs. Now try to do so if you had Parkinson’s disease. You may have all the freedom when it comes to thinking about doing something, but your body will be slow to execute that action. Here is an example of your freedom being limited.
